An application for a temporary residence permit or a permanent residence permit must be submitted in person or by mail (at the administration office) before the last day of the legal period stay in the Republic of Poland.

Polish law provides for the following types of temporary residence permits:

temporary residence and work permit,
temporary residence permit in order to work in a profession requiring high qualifications (Blue Card),
a temporary residence permit for the purpose of performing work by a foreigner delegated to the territory of the Republic of Poland by a foreign employer,
temporary residence permit for the purpose of conducting business activity,
a temporary residence permit for the purpose of studying,
temporary residence permit for the purpose of scientific research,
temporary residence permit for family members of citizens of the Republic of Poland and family members of foreigners,
residence permit on the territory of foreigners - victims of trafficking in human beings, short-term residence permit,
residence permit due to other circumstances.

Foreigners may apply for a permanent residence permit if they meet the conditions set out in the Act on Foreigners. Polish law provides for the following types of permits

Permanent residence permit (legalization in Poland)
- for spouses of Polish citizens,
- holders of a Pole's Card - it is not necessary to obtain an earlier temporary stay in Poland, a person with a Pole's Card, which is issued only by a consul, may submit an application for permanent residence. This form of legalization of stay in Poland can also be used by people who refer to Polish origin on the part of their parents, grandparents, great-grandparents,
- persons covered by international protection or tolerated stay, as well as children of Polish citizens and foreigners who have the right of permanent residence in Poland or a long-term resident's EU residence permit,
Residence permit for EU long-term residents
- For people who have lived in Poland for at least five years, have insurance in Poland, a stable source of income and a certificate of Polish language knowledge at the B1 level (or have completed their studies in Poland).
